Beer Bread

SIMPLEST BEER BREAD

Beer Bread is delicious, flexible, and so easy even I can do it.

The simplest recipe doesn’t call for much.  Set the oven to 350°F, and gather a mixing bowl, spatula, and bread loaf pan.

INGREDIENTS:

  • 12-ounce beer or your choice
  • 3 cups self-rising flour
  • Whatever herbs and spices make you happy (we usually add between a teaspoon and a tablespoon, from garlic powder to Italian Herb Mix)
  • Butter to drizzle over baking bread, if you want

Stir together, bake in a loaf pan for 50 minutes, drizzle with as much butter as you want, and finish for 10 final minutes in the oven.  Try to let it sit for at least 5 minutes–but we usually give in and eat a slice before then.  Your mileage may vary.

Extra Protein Beer Bread

The addition of an egg gives you about 7 extra grams of protein, in addition to the 48 grams from the flour.  If you’re like me and eat this bread in 5 giant servings, that’s about 11 grams of protein per serving–not a bad snack.

First, set the over to 350°F, and gather a mixing bowl, spoon or spatula, a bread loaf pan, and ingredients.

INGREDIENTS:

  • 12-ounce beer of whatever flavor or kind you prefer.  I’ve even read you can do this with seltzer water, but why would you do that?
  • 3 cups self-rising flour, or 3 cups regular flour and 3 tsps baking powder
  • up to 3 tbsps of sugar, if you like sweet bread
  • Whatever herbs and spices you enjoy
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup butter (or more, or less… but probably more)

STEPS:

  1. Preheat the oven, if you haven’t already, to 350°F.
  2. Add dry ingredients to bowl and stir gently.
  3. Add beer and egg and mix thoroughly.
  4. When oven is ready, pour mixture into the bread loaf pan.
  5. Bake 50 minutes; melt butter; remove bread from oven.
  6. Drizzle the butter over the top of the bread.
  7. Bake 10 more minutes.
  8. Don’t burn yourself in your rush to eat the buttery goodness.

Curious about changing various ingredients around?  Me too!  Stick around, and I’ll let you know what happens if you add extra eggs, add garlic, and otherwise play around with the recipe.  Stay curious, and stay tuned!
